Girls 7-a-side Football on Saturday 12th October at Bramcote School

Our year 5/6 girls took part in the Annual 7-A-Side Football Tournament at Bramcote. We were drawn in Group B with Gladstone Road, Cayton and East Ayton B, with the games lasting 7 minutes each. Our squad of players were as follows:-  Stevi, Bella, Beth, Molly, Hannah, Freya, Evie, Connie & Lillie-Mae.

Match One v Gladstone Road
In our first match of the tournament,  we came up against a strong Gladstone Road side(they won their other two matches). We were under pressure for much of the game, however, a combination of good defending, especially by Connie and Molly and two good saves by Beth, we held out for a goalless draw.  Final Score:- St. Martin's 0-0 Gladstone Road

Match Two v East Ayton B - In contrast to our first game, we dominated most of the game, we had several chances to score with Lillie-Mae, Freya and Hannah all going close, but due to good goalkeeping we were unable to score.   Final Score:- St. Martin's 0-0 East Ayton B

Match Three v Cayton - We went into our final group match knowing that a draw would put us into the knockout stage, as we would finish above Cayton on goal difference.  In a keenly contested match, both sides had chances to score, with Hannah twice having shots saved.  Unfortunately, Cayton converted one of their chances to win the game. Final Score:- St. Martin's 0-1 Cayton

We finished third in our group on 2 points, which resulted us going into a mini tournament for the 4 teams who finished third in each group.

Match Four v Hertford Vale Stevi went in goal for this game to give Beth chance to play out for a game. The matches were over 8 minutes, with penalties to decide the winner if a draw at the end of the game. Hertford Vale had some good chances to score but failed to have a shot on target. We had a few chances, the best of which fell to Lillie-Mae who came desperately close to scoring. Her fierce shot beat the goalkeeper, but hit the inside of the post, rolled along the line and back out. The match finished goalless, so we went to a best of three penalty shootout. Beth went in goal for the penalties saving Hertford Vales's first penalty. Hannah stepped up to take our first one confidently firing the ball into the bottom corner. Beth kept out Hertford Vale's second penalty, meaning if we scored our next penalty we'd win. Beth stepped up to fire the ball home and spark jubilant celebrations from our girls. Final Score:- St. Martin's 0-0 Hertford Vale

( St. Martin's win 2-0 on penalties)

Match Five : v Northstead Our final match saw us play Northstead to decide the best third place team. Once again, both sides had chances to win with Hannah going close twice forcing a good save and firing just wide. Northstead did manage to score with one of their chances.

Final Score:- St. Martin's 0-1 Northstead

The girls were a credit to the school playing with great spirit & enthusiasm & enjoyed the experience.

Year 3/4 football match on Tuesday 8th October at Braeburn School

Our year 3/4 boys got chance to play in a friendly tournament involving 12 local schools. The tournament was held at Braeburn School, two leagues of 6 teams each were drawn. We were in a league with Gladstone Road, Newby, Cayton, Barrowcliff and Lindhead. The matches were all played for 6 minutes each.

Our Squad :- Gabriel, Harry K, Luca, Tom, Jonas, Archie, Callum, Sam & Jude

Match one v  Lindhead
We played 9-a-side so everyone played the first game. Tom went in goal, making a couple of good saves. The boys showed their inexperience as this was their first ever match together, resulting on several occasions where the boys got too bunched up together, leaving no-one to pass too. Unfortunately, Lindhead scored the only goal, which Tom couldn't keep out.  Final Score:- St. Martin's 0-1 Lindhead

Match Two v Newby
We showed signs of improvement  with Jonas staying upfront as instructed, resulting in us managing our first shot on target, but their keeper saved it. Our inexperience showed in defence when we left players unmarked through one goal, resulting in Newby scoring twice.     Final Score - St. Martin's 0-2 Newby

Match Three v Cayton
Both sides were evenly matched, it was pleasing to see that some of the coaching given was showing in their play, with our defenders staying back more. Neither side had a clear cut chance with the match ended goalless.                                                                             Final Score - St. Martin's 0-0 Cayton

Match Four v Barrowcliff
In our best match so far, we dominated the first 5 minutes of the game, with Jonas, Gabriel and  Luca all having shots on goal. Archie went closer still, when he turned and shot, only to the ball hit the post and rebound away. Finally, our pressure told and we SCORED OUR FIRST GOAL, good work by Gabriel saw the ball fall to Jonas who calmly slotted the ball home. Unfortunately, Barrowcliff then came back into the game, scoring a brilliant solo goal, with Sam (who took over from Tom in goal) unable to stop the shot from beating him and going in off the inside of the post.     Final Score - St. Martin's 1-1 Barrowcliff

Match Five v Gladstone Road
In our final match, Jude began as sub, for the first time we played a team with only 8 players. Harry went in goal but was unable to stop Gladstone Road take an early lead with a fierce shot. Sam was unlucky when he went on a mazy run beating 3 players only to be denied by a last ditch tackle. Then good interplay between Gabriel and Jonas saw Jonas shoot just wide. Callum and Tom defended well, Jude came on for Archie. Sadly, Gladstone Road added a second goal to run out winners. Final Score - St. Martin's 0-2 Gladstone Road

Finally, a big thank you to Tom's mum for helping transport the team to Braeburn and to Mrs Cliffe for helping manage the boys between games.

High 5 Netball at St. Augustine’s School on Tuesday 1st October 2019

Two teams represented St. Martin’s at the first of this seasons netball tournaments.  We played against Lindhead, Wheatcroft and Newby and Scalby wining 3, losing 1 and drawing 1.

Well done to our players and thank to Mrs Jennings and Mrs Rutt.

Yr. 5/6 Girls Tag Rugby at Scarborough Rugby Club on Thursday 26thhSeptember 2019

Our year 5/6 girls took part in a friendly girl only tag rugby competition up at Scarborough Rugby Club. It was the first time that any of the girls had played tag rugby against other schools and they did St. Martin’s proud, showing lots of enthusiasm, skill, energy, team effort and resilience to play five matches in a row. They also had to put up with several rain showers that blew across the ground, in their first match play against a team with 10 players to our 7, in in the second match play against a team with 9 players to our 7. The results of the games were as follows: -

Match One v Hunmanby A - The girls did their best coming close to scoring on a couple of occasions, however, Hunmanby A ran in 4 tries to win the match,  Final Score :- St Martin's 0-4 Hunmanby A

Match Two v Braeburn - In a match that ebbed and flowed, the girls twice took the lead with tries by Eliza and Molly only to be pegged back by Braeburn. Eliza though sealed the win with two further tries.  Final Score :- St Martin's 4-2 Braeburn

Match Three v Hunmanby B  In a thrilling match that saw our girls take the lead three times through tries from Eliza, Molly and Holly only for Hunmanby to cancel each try out with a try of their own. Megan won the match for us with a last minute try.  Final Score :- St Martin's 4-3 Hunmanby B

Match Four v East Ayton  In another see-saw match, Bella and Eliza twice gave us the lead only for us to again concede equalizing tries. Holly went over for the decisive try before Eliza scored her second try of the match right at the end to secure the win.  Final Score :- St Martin's 4-2 East Ayton

Match Five v Newby  Our final match saw another close fought match with Newby cancelling out a try by Holly to take the lead with two tries of their own. Megan then equalised with a fine try only for Newby to regain the lead. Molly though ensured we drew the match by scoring our third try.
Final Score :- St Martin's 3-3 Newby

Finally, a huge thank you to Megan's mum and Mrs Jennings for helping transport the team to the rugby club.

Year 5/6 football league on Wednesday 25th September at Wheatcroft School

Team :- Robert, Ben, Casey, Joey M., Monty, Luca S., Bertie & Oskar

We today took part in our first super league matches each lasting 15 minutes each.

Match One :- v Wheatcroft
In our first match we played well from the start & after going close twice, Luca opened the scoring for us. Casey & Ben both made vital clearances before Oskar turned sharply to fire us into a two goal lead. Robert had little to do in goal & shortly before the match finished Luca scored again.

Final Score :- St Martin's 3-0 Wheatcroft

Match Two:-  v Overdale
In a hard fought match which could have gone either way, the match was settled by a brilliant  team goal scored by Oskar, after several passes cut the Overdale defence to pieces leaving Oskar with a tap in at the far post. Robert made several outstanding saves.
Final Score :- St Martin's 1-0 Overdale

Match Three :- v Braeburn
In our final match we dominated the game and ran out comprehensive winners. Another great team goal saw Oskar open the scoring, before Luca scored three excellent goals and we came close on several other occasions.
Final Score :- St Martin's 4-0 Braeburn

Finally, a big thank you to Robert's dad for helping move our goals over to Wheatcroft & then back again after the matches.

Summer Smash Cricket at Scarborough Cricket Ground on Wednesday 22nd May 2019

Edward, Sam, Oskar, Thomas, Josh, Eliza, Lillie-Mae, Olivia, Holly and Joshua took part in this event at the Scarborough Cricket Ground on North Marine Road.  They played against local schools.  In our first game we beat Lindhead, we then lost to Cayton and in the final game we beat Sherburn.

The children played really well as a team and were a credit to themselves and St. Martin’s.

Year 3/4 Tennis at Hackness Tennis Club on Thursday 23rd May and Thursday 6th June 2019

Lillie-Mae, Eliza, Oskar, Edward and Holly have represented St. Martin’s at all of the games this season and have not lost one match.  Well done to you all.

They now go through to the North Yorkshire 2019 School Game Finals - at Queen Margaret’s School, Sunday 7th July.

17th June 2019 at St Martin's School

Group 3 Gladstone Road; Northstead; St Martin's; Newby

St Martin's Team :- Ben , Jacob , Jake , Lewis , Max , Harvey, Millie and Mirren

Match v Northstead

In our opening match we played Northstead and after Ben won the toss, we put Northstead into bat. We managed to take 6 Northstead wickets during the 8 overs bowled, including some good catches and run outs. Northstead scored a total of 223/6 (each team starts with 200 runs, & for each wicket you lose 5 runs).  Ben and Jake opened the batting, with Lewis and Jacob going in next. Millie and Mirren were next in and finally Harvey and Max closed our innings. Unfortunately, although we only lost 3 wickets, we fell 4 runs short of Northstead's total, finishing on 219/3.

Match v Gladstone Road

In our final match (Newby were unable to attend), we played a strong Gladstone Road team and after they won the toss, they chose to bowl first. We kept the same batting partners, although we changed the order around with Millie and Mirren opening the batting against some very hostile bowling. We played some good shots, but unfortunately lost 5 wickets as well finishing on 201/5. Gladstone Road were initially pegged back with some good bowling and terrific fielding with Ben and Lewis both taking excellent catches. However, they eventually proved too strong for us, finishing on 222/4.

Overall, the team did us proud as they were put together at the last minute, with no practice and we were the only team to field girls as well as boys. Although we lost both matches, there is an outside chance that we may progress to the Area Finals as some teams have pulled out.

The children all swan incredibly well securing 7th place in the competition and were a credit to St. Martin’s School.  Many thanks to the parents for helping to bring the children back to school.

Friendly Year 5/6 Girls Football match on Wednesday 20th March 2019

Our year 5/6 girls took part in a friendly match against Wheatcroft School on our own playing field and the first school match to be played here for over 4 years - the match lasting 15 minutes each half.

Our squad of players were as follows :- Beth (goalkeeper), Andrea, Darcy, Jasmine ( defenders), Millie e, Eliza, Mirren, Ruby R ( midfielders) & Hannah (forward).

Wheatcroft had 8 players, so we rotated the girls so that most of them had a spell as sub during the game.

First Half

In an evenly contested first half, the girls performed well taking on board the coaching they'd had before the game began. Our defence stood firm with Jasmine, Andrea & Darcy in particular making some important tackles & interceptions. Hannah battled hard upfront and fired one shot in that went wide. The girls in midfield linked up well on a few occasions but were unable to conjure up a clear chance. Wheatcroft did create a couple of chances themselves, however, they failed to call Beth into action as both chances were fired wide.

Half Time - St Martin's 0-0 Wheatcroft

Second Half

Once again, the second half was evenly fought out with both sides making a few chances. We forced some early pressure with Mirren, Eliza, Ruby and Millie working hard in midfield resulting in us forcing a few corners. Our best chance came when Mirren (who was playing in attack, whilst Hannah was sub), burst through the Wheatcroft defence following good work by Eliza and Millie, seeing her shot tipped past the post by the Wheatcroft keeper. Again Wheatcroft also had a couple of chances which were fired wide. Unfortunately, in the final attack of the match, Wheatcroft scored the only goal of the match after the ball broke to Wheatcroft’s centre forward a few yards from goal, despite the best efforts of Beth, she couldn't keep the shot out.

Final Score - St Martin's 0-1 Wheatcroft

They did body management, floor routine and vault. Some children were lucky enough to win individual medals, all year groups got team medals

The behaviour from every one of the children was impeccable a credit to their parents and fabulous advocates for our school.

A huge thank you to Mrs Walker, Mrs Jennings and Mrs Rutt for all their support and guidance in practices sessions and the main event.

Year 5/6 Football on Wednesday 5th December 2018 at Raincliffe Sportshall

Our Year 5/6 boys took part in a six-a-side indoor tournament at Raincliffe School Sports Hall. There were seven teams taking part; the only team we didn't get to play was Gladstone Road.

Our squad of players:- Harvey, Jacob, Lewis, Luca, Ben, Monty, Hugo & Bailey.

Match One v St. Peter's - Won 3-0
We played very well Harvey opened the scoring with a neat finish, shortly after Luca put us 2-0 up. St. Peter's then came close to pulling a goal back, but Ben made a brilliant full length diving save. Finally, Monty scored a third goal for us making the final score 3-0.

Match Two v Barrowcliff - Won 2-0
Once again we controlled much of game after Monty had a shot saved, Luca cleverly passed the ball between two defenders for Monty to score from close range. Almost straight from the kick off, we went 2-0 when Luca scored. Hugo who came on for Lewis nearly made it 3-0 when his fierce shot came back off the post. Ben made another good save to keep his second clean sheet.

Match Three v Friarage - Won 3-0
Bailey and Hugo both started this match, Bailey played brilliantly in defence. Monty opened the scoring in the first minute, shortly after Lewis scored with a great shot. Ben then made a good one handed save, before Jacob nipped in to make it 3-0.

Match Four v Northstead - Won 1-0
In a closely fought match both sides played well the game was decided on two main moments. The first one happened early on when the Northstead goalie encroached out of his area and we were awarded a penalty. Luca smashed home the penalty to give us the lead. Then in the last attack of the match, Ben made an unbelievable double save - initially saving a shot low down to his right, the ball came loose and from only two yards out a follow up shot was going into the opposite corner of the goal, but somehow Ben scrambled across his goal to stop the ball on the line.

Match Four v Lindhead - Lost 2-1
Unfortunately we couldn't keep going in our final match, after Ben made a good early save, he was beaten from long range by a thunderous shot that he had no chance of saving. Lindhead then went further ahead when they scored from close range. Harvey then smashed home a long range shot to get us back into the game, but despite late pressure we were unable to grab an equaliser.

Overall, the boys did very well winning four of their five matches and playing in a sporting manner throughout.

Year 5/6 Girls Football tournament on Wednesday 21stNovember 2018 at Raincliffe Sportshall

Our year 5/6 girls took part in an Indoor Football Tournament at Raincliffe Indoor Sports Hall, involving five other schools (Barrowcliffe School had two teams). Our squad of players were as follows:- Millie, Ruby, Mirren, Eliza, Andrea, Beth & Hannah.

Match One v Seamer and Irton - won 1-0

Match Two v Barrowcliffe B - won 1-0

Match Three v Gladstone Road - drew 0-0

Match Four v Barrowcliffe A - won 1-0

Match Five v Lindhead - drew 0-0

Overall, the girls performed very well, going undefeated over five matches without conceding a goal (the only team to do so!); they were a credit to the school with their teamwork, sporting attitude and battling effort. A big thank you to Mr Bowman and Mr Mellor for coaching the girls and helping transport them to the venue.

Year 5/6 Tag Rugby at Scarborough Rugby Club on Wednesday 14th November 2018

Our year 5/6 mixed tag rugby team took part in the second tournament held at Scarborough Rugby Club ground. The conditions were cold but dry; they got to play with the floodlights on. The matches were of 10 minutes duration each.

We took a team of 8 players this time:- Ruben, Jake, Peter, Franky, Harley, Eliza, Millie and Mirren

Match One v Overdale - Lost 4 tries to 3. ( 6-a-side)

Match Three v Newby - Lost 4 tries to 1. (8-a-side)

Match Four v Northstead - Lost 7 tries to 3. (8-a-side)

Overall, although the results didn't go our way, the children should be proud of their efforts and sportsmanship in getting on with the games despite some of the teams breaking the rules and several referring decisions going against us. Finally, a big thank you to Peter's dad and Franky's mum for helping transport the children to the venue.

Girls Football league on Tuesday 9th October 2018 at Flamingo Land Stadium

Squad :- Darcy, Mirren, Andrea, Millie, Eliza, Jasmine & Hannah

Match One - v Friarage - Won 1-0
Match Two - v Lindhead - Drew 0-0

Match Three - v Cayton - Won 2-0
Match Four - v Newby - Lost 1-0
Semi - Final - v Gladstone Road - Drew 0-0 (won 2-1 on penalties)
In a very tense match, the girls withstood some strong pressure from Gladstone Road, with good defensive work by Jasmine and Eliza( who was now in goal) making a great one on one save. In the last couple of minutes the girls began to get control of the ball and forced a corner in the final seconds of the match. Millie swung over the corner and in the goal-mouth scramble that followed, Hannah poked the ball home ...
Unfortunately, the whistle for full time was sounded a couple of seconds before Hannah scored, so the goal didn't count. This meant the match had to be decided by a sudden death penalty shootout. Gladstone Road won the toss and elected to go second, so Millie stepped up to take our first penalty and although the keeper got her hand to it, Millie's shot went in meaning Gladstone Road had to score. Their player confidently smashed the ball into our goal giving Eliza no chance to save it. The pressure was now back on us, Hannah came forward to take our next penalty, she fired in a brilliant shot into the corner of the goal which again meant Gladstone Road had to score. Unfortunately for Gladstone Road their next penalty taker saw their penalty come back off the crossbar meaning the girls had reached the final!
Final - v Wheatcroft - Drew 1-1 ( Lost 1-0 on penalties)

In a closely fought final, both sides had chances to score early on before Wheatcroft took advantage of a miss-placed pass to open the scoring giving Eliza no chance with the shot. The girls then pressed hard for an equaliser, Millie was inches away when her curling shot beat the keeper but went the wrong side of the post. However, the girls were not to be denied when Hannah fired in a great shot to equalise with two minutes left. The final two minutes were very tense, but neither side could find a winner.
Once again we faced a sudden death penalty shoot out to decide the winner of the cup. Wheatcroft won the toss and elected to go first. Eliza did her best but couldn't stop their first penalty which meant the girls had to score. Millie stepped up bravely to take our penalty but despite beating the keeper her shot was just too high and unfortunately came back off the underside of the bar meaning Wheatcroft won.

The girls showed great sportsmanship throughout the tournament and were a credit to the school with their effort and teamwork despite only having one hour practise together before the tournament began.

Boys Football league on Thursday 4th October 2018

Hugo, Bailey, Harvey, Lewis, Jacob, Monty, Ben and Luca

The boys took part in our first Year 5/6 football tournament at Scarborough's Flamingo Land Ground involving 16 local Schools. We were in group 3 which included Braeburn, Filey and Friarage. The matches were 8 minutes with the winners of the group going to the semi-finals.
Match One :- v Braeburn - won 4-0

Match Two :- v Filey - won 2-1
Match Three :- v Friarage - won 3-0
The boys played fantastically taking us through to the semi-finals.

Semi Final v Gladstone Road - Lost 3-0
We began the game well and played some great football, Harvey almost gave us the lead when his header from a corner just went the wrong side of the post, and saw his shot brilliantly saved. Despite playing the better football, Gladstone Road took the lead against the run of play, and moments later following a defensive mix up, they scored again. We pushed hard to get back into the game, Luca went on a run beating three Gladstone Road players but put his shot just wide. Unfortunately, in the final minute following another defensive error, Gladstone Road scored again.
Third Placed Play-Off v Hunmanby - Won 1-0
We had the better of the chances in a close fought match, Luca had a shot saved early on, before Harvey scored to give us the lead. Luca again came close on two occasions to adding to our lead. Hunmanby came back into the game, after conceding a free kick just outside our area, Ben made a fantastic save to keep the shot out. Lewis almost made it 2-0 right at the end when he was put clean through but the keeper saved at his feet.

The boys played with great skill, enthusiasm and fair play being a credit to the school and should be proud of their efforts in finishing third out of 16 Primary Schools. A big thank you to Mr Mellor and Mr Bowman for his coaching of the boys.

Match One - V St Peters

Team - Charlie, Ben, Joe, Kaiden, Nathaniel, Eddie, Tom and Rio

1st Half - In an evenly matched first half of few chances Rio came the closest to scoring when he flicked a header over the keeper against the post and his follow up shot was blocked by the goalkeeper. Half Time - 0-0

2nd Half - (Cole replaced Tom) We started the 2nd half well, Eddie who had been unlucky with several good shots, tried his luck again, firing a great shot into the top corner despite the goalkeeper getting a hand to his shot. Unfortunately, St Peters hit straight back even though Charlie did his best to keep the shot out. Shortly after, Ben went on a great run from his own half before smashing a tremendous shot into the top corner. With only two minutes to go, St Peters counter-attacked and equalised with a shot into the corner of the goal.

Final Score - St Martin's 2-2 St Peters

Match Two - V Hunmanby

Team - Josh, Ben, Joe, Tom, Cole, Nathaniel, Kaiden and Rio

2nd Half - (Eddie replaced Nathaniel, & Charlie replaced Rio) Hunmanby started the 2nd half and Josh was called upon to make a few good saves. We then began to get back on top, scoring a fourth goal when Charlie chased a through ball but missed his kick which caused confusion in the Hunmanby defence, Joe fired in the loose ball. Finally, with the last attack of the match, Charlie was put through and scored with a great finish.

Final Score - St Martin's 5-0 Hunmanby

Year 3/4 Football Tournament at the Scarborough TEC Wednesday 31 January 2018

Team:- Ben, Theo, Monty, Robert, Peter, Joey and Edward

Match One v Barrowcliff

In a hard fought match, the boys played well as a team and created some good chances. Robert took advantage of a defensive error to open the scoring and almost scored again when Monty put in a great cross and Robert almost scored with a diving header.

Final Score:- St Martin's 1-0 Barrowcliff

Match Two v Newby

Newby proved to be tougher opposition and each side cancelled out the main attacking threats from each other. Robert had a couple of half chances, and Ben made a couple of good saves.

Final Score:- St Martin's 0-0 Newby

Match Three v Braeburn

The boys played really well Robert nearly scored with a blockbuster of a shot that crashed against the post, and from the rebound he fired in another shot that hit the same post. After further pressure Theo fired home from close range, then a minute later, Theo added a second following a defensive error.

Final Score:- St Martin's 2-0 Braeburn

Match Four v Bramcote

This proved to be our hardest match with Bramcote having already won all their matches with big wins. Unfortunately, Bramcote scored two quick fire goals early on but then following excellent build up play Robert laid off a great pass to Theo who crashed the ball home from the edge of the area. Despite further pressure from the boys they couldn't force an equaliser and in the last minute Bramcote broke away to score again.

Final Score:- St Martin's 1-3 Bramcote

Girls Football Tournament at the Scarborough TEC on Wednesday 24th January 2018

Our year5/6 girls took part in a friendly football tournament. Three year five girls Jasmine, Darcy and Mirren took part for the first time, & thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The weather was cold and windy, although at least the rain held off. Each game lasted 6 minutes.

Team :- Zhane, Jemima, Ruby, Millie, Eliza, Darcy, Jasmine, Mirren and Hannah

Match one: St Martin's 0-0 Friarage

We controlled much of the match and went close twice with Hannah & Millie going close. Mirren played her first full match, whilst Darcy & Jasmine both played half of the match each for their first starts.

Match two: St Martin's 1-0 Barrowcliff

All the girls got to play the whole match, and in a close fought match, Barrowcliff almost scored early in the match when they hit the post, Zhane made some good saves. We eventually started to have a few attacks of our own, Millie fired the ball home in the last minute of the match.

Match three: St Martin's 1-0 Braeburn

Similar to the first game we had the better of the match, Millie, Hannah and Eliza all went close, before Millie beat the keeper from close range to score the only goal of the game.

Match four: St Martin's 1-0 Newby

Once again we had the better of the match Millie, Eliza and Hannah all went close, with Hannah having a shot tipped onto the bar. Hannah then broke the deadlock with a good turn and finish shortly before the end of the match.

This concluded the official friendly tournament; however, as the tournament finished early, we got to play another friendly against Friarage.

Match five: St Martin's 3-0 Friarage

Unlike the first match, we took our chances and Millie soon put us a goal ahead. Then after further pressure, Millie scored a great second goal with a long range shot into the bottom corner.

Finally, Eliza scored with a fine shot with the last kick of the game.

Overall all the girls performed admirably, especially in the cold conditions

In the second two games the boys played the football they are capable of and were simple far too good for both Wheatcroft and Friarage.

Well done boys.

In our first League game against Newby the girls did their best and created two good chances for Millie, one went just wide and the other hit the post but unfortunately Newby scored three goals despite Zhane’s best efforts. In an even second half, Newby scored a fourth goal before Mille pulled a goal back just before the end. Final score Newby 4-1 St. Martin’s.

Our second game we played a friendly against Friarage. Zhane made a good save early on before we took control of the match.  In the second half Eliza, who had pulled a muscle in her leg before the game, bravely played part of the game. Ruby took a long throw which deflected off a Friarage defender and into the goal, Millie then burst through to score a second goal.

Barrowcliff improved in the second half and their excellent forward scored 4 goals.

The second game against Friarage started badly and the girls were soon 1-0 behind. A strong reply with goals from Eliza, Millie and an own goal then another goal from Millie saw the girls leading 4-1 at half time. A more even second half with the teams scoring saw the game finish 5-2 to St. Martin’s.

Well done everyone with special mention to Zhane and Millie.

The Year 5/6 boys did extremely well in the Round Robin medium schools football which took place at Braeburn School. The boys played some excellent football on the evening remaining unbeaten across 4 matches. The boys were a real credit to the school, playing excellent football, keeping the team shape worked upon in training on Wednesday afternoon and conducted themselves superbly.

Girls Football on Tuesday 31st October at Northstead School

Rhianna, Ruby, Millie, Zhane, Jemima, Hannah and Eliza.

On a cold and blustery afternoon at Northstead School our Year 5/6 girls took part in a schools tournament.

Match 1 – Northstead v St. Martin’s

Our girls battled bravely in tricky conditions with a strong wind blowing across the pitch. It was also the first time that most of the girls had played a competitive football match. Millie was unlucky on several good runs, Ruby and Jemima made lots of tackles and clearances and Zhane did well in goal. Unfortunately Northstead scored twice making the final score Northstead 2- 0 St. Martin’s.

Match 2 – Lindhead v St. Martin’s

In an evenly fought match all the girls played really well and improved on their performance. The main highlights involved 2 good saves by Zhane, the first from point blank range and also a fantastic run by Millie where she went past three players before shooting just past the post. Final score Lindhead 0 - 0 St. Martin’s.

Match 3– Friarage v St. Martin’s

The girls played their best so far and dominated the match with good midfield performances by Eliza and Rhianna with Ruby and Jemima clearing up in defence. The stars of the match were Hannah who came close to scoring twice, shooting just wide on both occasions and Millie who had an amazing run and hit a great shot past the Friarage keeper to put us 1-0 up before going on to score our second goal. Final score Friarage 0 - 2 St. Martin’s.

Match 1 – Newby v St. Martin’s

In our final match the girls played really well once again. Millie had an early chance but fired just wide, Newby almost scored but they also fired wide. Millie then took advantage of a goal keeping error and scored a goal. Newby made good attempts but Zhane made some great saves, then with just a couple of minutes to go, Newby attacker hit a great shot to equalise.

Final score Newby 1 - 1 St. Martin’s.

Brian Robinson Trophy 7-a-side Football on Saturday 7th October at Bramcote School

Rio, Reuben, Nathaniel, Josh, Ben, Joe, Eddie and Jacob

Our Year 5/6 boys put in a very good performance in the tournament. The boys won their group beating Hertford Vale 3-0, Wheatcroft 4-0 and drawing with Seamer & Irton 0-0. The boys played some excellent football, particularly against Wheatcroft and progressed through to the knock-out quarter finals.

Despite totally dominating the game against Barrowcliff the team were unable to score and a breakaway goal for their opponents resulted in a 1-0 defeat. Some disappointed boys reluctantly had to head home but they should be proud of the quality of football they produced on the day.

Yr5/6 Boys Football Tournament at Bramcote

Team:- Josh , Joe , Jacob , Reuben, Nathaniel, Eddie, Ben and Rio (Charlie unavailable re fractured wrist)

Match 1 v St Peters won 1-0

A very even match was decided when Ben scored with the last kick of the match.

Match 2 v Cayton lost 2-0

Rio came close to scoring several times but unfortunately Cayton scored twice with two breakaway goals.

Match 3 v Wheatcroft won 2-0

We dominated the match and won with two fine goals scored by Ben and Rio.

Match 4 v Hunmanby won 2-0

Again we dominated the match with Ben, Eddie, Rio and Nathaniel coming close. We took the lead thanks to a spectacular own goal and Rio scored the second following an error by their goalkeeper.

Match 5 v Lindhead won 6-0

We went goal crazy in our final match. Rio opened the scoring with a tremendous volley from the edge of the area. Reuben then surpassed that when he scored three brilliant goals with shots from long range, his third goal came between two goals from Ben.

Overall the boys played really well, showed great team spirit and didn't let the loss of Charlie affect them after he broke his arm on the morning of the match, he even came along to support his team.

North Yorkshire 2017 School Game finals

at Queen Margaret’s School, York - Sunday 9th July

So here we were Sunday 9th July 2017 once again competing in the North Yorkshire school games. We had four teams representing St Martin's - Netball, Y3/4 tennis, Y5/6 tennis and Y3/4 tri-golf. After a quick welcoming ceremony in the marquee, our teams were raring to go. Over on the Netball pitches the team showed good team spirit. They played 9 matches - won 2, drew 3 and lost 4. They all gave everything in the heat and showed good sportsmanship. Losing Ayane and Kirsty to the tennis team made it difficult to rotate players as they were becoming tired. It was a great experience for all the team members and one which some of them will never forget - playing in county finals!

Over at the golf the team took part in 12 tri-golf events. They were against the clock as they tried to score as many points as possible for the team. Every team member spurred each other on, showed great team spirit and where a credit to St Martin’s. The golf team came an impressive 5th place within North Yorkshire!

Y3/4 tennis team started promptly with the team winning two out of four of their first matches. The heat was on literally, as this has to be one of the hottest days so far this year! Once nerves were put aside, the team went onto win the remaining matches which ensured they went into the play off finals for 3/4 place. After more water and a quick snack, the team were determined to be going home with a medal. They dug deep and won the points needed to ensure the team took bronze! A well-deserved win in very hot and uncomfortable conditions. Well done!

The Y5/6 tennis team were up next and it was getting hotter and hotter! Determined to go out and do their best the team played strongly and cheered each other on. The first heat was tough and against strong opposition, but the team ensured they won a place in the semi-finals. They played against a strong Harrogate team but continued to win the games and the points. When the results were announced that St Martin’s were through to the finals, the beaming smiles from the team said that this was going to be a memorable day! Quick snack and water and they were on court for the final against a team from York. No one knew where to look as those games were being played. Kirsty finished her game first, it was a win. Ayane then finished hers - another win. Joffy conceded his game but scored 6 points for the team. Joe was last to finish his game giving another win. The Netball team had come to give their support and it was a tense and nervous wait for the points to be added up. St Martin's 36 points - York 31 points. The team had won GOLD!! Tears, hugs and congratulations were shared before the team went to the marquee to be crowned the Tennis North Yorkshire county champions. Well done Tennis team, a well-deserved medal and title!

Thank you all the parents who came to support the children and cheer the teams on. Special thanks to those people and children who were there all day representing our school

Quad kids at York University on Tuesday 27 June 2017

Our Year 1/2 Athletes travelled to York University on Tuesday to compete in this year’s NYSG finals. It poured down all day and conditions were difficult but we managed to throw our javelin, leap in our long jump and run like the wind on the track gaining great points for our team total along the way. Against the other 8 schools from across the County we finished in second place picking up silver medals. A huge well done to Harry, Ashton, Archie, Edward, Oskar, Bertie, Holly, Eliza, Linaya, Freya, Lilly Mae and Olivia who were amazing. Our thanks to our band of travelling supporters who also braved the rain!

Girls Cricket at Wykham Monday 26tJune 2017

The girls’ cricket team are defending area champions so travelled to Wykeham CC looking to retain the trophy.  We made an excellent start winning all group matches against Hertford Vale, Lindhead and Filey. We took on Northstead in the semi-final but just lost out by 2 runs ! Showing how close the margins between winning and losing can be. Well done to all our girls though, as ever, representing our school so well.

Thank you also to Mr Bowman for taking and he coaching us.

Year 5/6 Tri Golf Tournament on Thursday 22nd June 2017

Joe, Tom, Reuben, Ben, Josh, Jessica, Katie, Sabeeka, Libby and Zhane

In this friendly tournament between Seamer and Irton, Newby, Gladstone Road and Lindhead the children had the opportunity to use proper golf clubs instead of the plastic ones we normally use. They did chipping, putting and driving games. It was a fun morning, made better that we didn’t get too wet in the downpour.  Out of the six schools we played against we came 3rd. Well done.

Quadkids Competition

On Thursday 15th June we took teams from Yrs. 1,2,3 and 4 in the morning and Yrs. 5 and 6 in the afternoon to Bramcote to take part in the Quadkids which is a “four event” athletic competition. This involves throwing, jumping, sprinting and a long distance run. The children need to be multi-skilled to compete as they do each event. Many of the local schools took part. Yr. 3/4 came 8th, Yr. 5/6 came 3rd and we are delighted that our Yr. 1/2 came in 1st place taking us through to the County Final Championships in York on 27th June. Well done to everyone who took part and many thanks to Mr Hazledine for all you help.

Junior Rounders Competition

The juniors were given the chance to play in a Rounders competition with each team, where possible, having a mixture of Year 3,4,5 and 6 children in them and also comprising of boys and girls.

We had 9 teams take part (approximately 90 juniors) and they each came up with a team name. We had:-

The Potato Rounders, The Star Team, The Fire Starters, The Strikers, The Broccoli Bashers, The House Martins, The Unbeatables, The Smashmellows and The Destroyers.

After some closely fought matches, the Strikers beat the Destroyers 2-1 in the 3rd place playoff.

The final was even closer with both the Potato Rounders and the Unbeatables scoring 3 rounds each. However the Potato Rounders won as they only had 2 batsmen out to the 3 of the Unbeatables.

Everyone had a great time, with good sportsmanship seen by all.

Area Final Kwik Cricket at Wykeham Cricket Club on Wednesday 14tJune 2017

Cole, Eddie, Rueben, Joe, Jake, Charlie, Nathaniel and Tom

After qualifying for the area finals our team went to Wykeham Cricket Club where we played against Filey, East Ayton and St. Peter’s.

We played Filey first and scored 225/5 off their 8 overs. We then batted and in the final over with two balls to go we were winning with 4 runs. However, controversially Tom was given out when the Filey bowler stumped him out as he was stood out of his crease when the bowler came to bowl – he should really have been given a warning. This meant we now trailed by 1 run and although Nathanial scored a run off the last ball we drew the match as we also scored 225/3.

We then played East Ayton who were the reigning Champions and a very good team. They batted first and scored 267/1. Our batsmen struggled to score runs against good bowling and we finished on 213/5.

Finally we played St. Peter’s on a pitch with a large slope that made batting hard. We batted first and scored 200/8. St. Peter’s then batted and scored 259/1.

Well done to all the boys who took part as the majority of the teams were made up of Y 6.

Year 5/6 boys Football on Thursday 2 March

Josh B, Ben C, Joe, Rio, Reuben T, Charlie, Kaiden, Harley and Eddie.

Three really good performances. The team played excellent football throughout the evening. The boys were really well behaved and in all three games they kept their shape and played some really good passing football.

Wins against Friarage and Overdale were followed by a close game against Lindhead. Although the team lost 4-1 they were leading 1-0 with only 5 minutes remaining. The tam lost out to a very good Lindhead team who were older, bigger and stronger, St. Martin’s were all year 5 boys.

Well done to everyone. A really positive and enjoyable evening. Special mention to Joe for going into goal when Charlie was injured.
