Year 5/6 football league on Wednesday 12th February 2020 at George Pindar Leisure

Our year 5/6 boys took part in the latest round of Super League matches in which we played against Gladstone Road, Lindhead & St Peter's School's on the 3G pitches at Pindar School. The matches were 7aside, our team was as follows :- Robert, Ben C, Joey M, Casey, Monty, Luca S & Oskar.

Match One v Gladstone Road ( Match lasted 8 minutes each way)
We started brightly, and in the first minute, Luca burst through to open the scoring with a powerful shot. However, the lead didn't last long as Gladstone Road took advantage of a mistake from our throw in and they equalised. Both teams had chances to take the lead, before Gladstone Road did so with a thunderous shot from distance to lead 2-1 at half time. The boys showed great tenacity to claw their way back into the match and Monty finished off a fine move early in the second half to equalise. This energised our team even more and shortly after, Luca scored his second goal of the game to put us 3-2 up. Once again, both sides came close to scoring, before the game had one final twist when with literally the last kick of the match, Gladstone Road equalised after a long range shot eluded Robert in goal as he lost the flight of the ball due the sun been in his eyes.
Final Score :- St Martin's 3-3 Gladstone Road

Match Two v  Lindhead( Match lasted 8 minutes each way)
In a match of contrasting halves, Lindhead dominated the first half scoring early on, then twice hit our post before scoring a second just before half time. To lead 2-0 at half time. However, after a few words of encouragement were given by Mr Mellor at half time, the boys responded positively and within a minute Monty had pulled a goal back after good defensive play from Joey had put Monty through. This inspired the boys who then shortly after equalised when Luca fired home, before Monty completed the comeback by firing in our third goal. Robert then made a couple of crucial saves to keep our lead, with Ben and Casey making vital clearances. Finally, Oskar put the seal on our victory when he added a fourth goal.
Final Score :- St Martin's 4-2 Lindhead

Match Three v St Peter's ( Match lasted 6 minutes each way)
Our final match was reduced to 6 minutes each way because the fixtures were running late and both teams had a player who had to leave early ( Robert had to leave as he had a tournament over in York). Ben volunteered to go in goal making an early save but was powerless to stop the next attack as St Peter's took an early lead. However, in our best display of the night, brilliant interplay between Luca, Monty and Oskar saw us score four times in a matter of minutes with Monty scoring twice, Luca and Oskar scored the other two goals. So at half time we led 4-1. Luca then added a fifth shortly after the restart and completed his hat trick midway through the second half. St Peter's never gave up  grabbing a second goal with the last attack of the match.
Final Score :- St Martin's 6-2 St Peter's

Finally, a big thank you to Oskar's mum for helping transport the team to Pindar.

Year 3/4 football on Thursday 21st November at Pindar School

On a cold, windy but thankfully dry afternoon, our year 3/4 boys took part in a friendly football tournament held at Pindar School's 3G pitches.  Our squad was made up of the following boys:- Luca, Gabriel, Jonas, Sam, Harry, Callum & Tom. We played 4 matches that lasted 6 minutes each.

Match One v Hertford Vale
Our opening match saw our Y 3/4 boys put in a commanding performance in which they dominated the match from start to finish. Tom opened the scoring with a good shot after good work by Luca, shortly after Luca added a second. Harry made a couple of important defensive interceptions and from one of these Luca added a third. Finally, in the final minute Luca swung over a corner ans Tom met it superbly with a bullet header that gave the keeper no chance.
Final Score :- St. Martin's 4-0 Hertford Vale

Match Two v Barrowcliff
In a hard fought second match, both sides cancelled each other out for much of the match. The outcome was decided on two incidents, the first of which happened when Luca put in a great cross to Tom who was unmarked in the centre of the goal, unfortunately, he failed to make contact with the ball, which then ran to an unmarked Callum, who sliced his shot wide. The other incident occurred when Barrowcliff fired in a long range shot that Jonas saved superbly,  but as he hit the ground, the ball squirmed from his grasp and a Barrowcliff player knocked the ball into our goal.
Final Score :- St. Martin's 0-1 Barrowcliff

Match Three v Friarage
Sam Cliffe took over in goal from Jonas( who went upfront) for this match. Our boys controlled much of the match and halfway through came agonisingly close to scoring, when the ball ran loose to Tom whose close range shot came back off the underside of the bar and Callum couldn't score from the rebound. However, Tom wasn't to be denied when with the last attack of the match he fired home from close range. Final Score :- St. Martin's 1-0 Friarage

Match Four v Lindhead
In our final match, Luca took over from Sam in goal. Both sides had chances to score, with Luca making two routine saves to deny Lindhead. In the final minute  Gabriel fired home from close range after a goalmouth scramble to give us the win.  Final Score :- St. Martin's 1-0 Lindhead

Finally, a big thank you to Tom's mum for helping to transport the boys to the venue.

Year 5/6 football match on Thursday 14th November at Pindar school

Our year 5/6 boys took part in a mini tournament at Pindar School, on the 3G pitches, in cold, wet and windy conditions.

Our squad was as follows :- Robert, Ben, Casey, Monty, Luca and Oskar( unfortunately, Joey M was poorly on the day of the tournament).

The 7-a-side matches lasted 6 minutes each apart from our second match against Newby where they played 6-a-side, we had a player less than the opposition in our three remaining games.

Match One v Gladstone Road
We battled well throughout the match with some excellent link up play between Luca, Monty and Oskar whilst Ben and Casey made several excellent tackles and interceptions. The best chance of the match fell to Oskar, who hit the post. Final Score :- St Martin's 0-0 Gladstone Road

Match Two v Newby
In a close fought match, Newby took the lead early on, but unfortunately, despite several good chances bringing out great saves from the Newby keeper and desperate goal line clearances by Newby, we were unable to score an equaliser. Final Score:- St. Martin's 0-1 Newby

Match Three v Barrowcliff
Despite playing with one player less we dominated the match and scored three great goals at regular intervals. Monty opened the scoring, Oskar added a second and Luca scored the third goal.

Final Score :- St. Martin's 3-0 Barrowcliff

Match Four v Seamer & Irton
We had to play our third game in a row and with one less player, however, our team showed commendable spirit in battling hard throughout the match, played in atrocious conditions and against a good side. Unfortunately, Seamer scored a spectacular curling effort early on to open the scoring, & then following a foul by Casey, they scored a lucky second direct from the free kick when the wind swerved the ball into the corner of the net, wrong footing Robert in goal. Robert then made a good save. The boys never gave up, and with the last attack of the match, we forced a corner, Monty swung the ball in and Luca scored with a fantastic header. Final Score :- St. Martin's 1-2 Seamer & Irton

Finally, a big thank you to all the parents who helped transport the boys to Pindar.

Girls 7-a-side Football on Saturday 12th October at Bramcote School

Our year 5/6 girls took part in the Annual 7-A-Side Football Tournament at Bramcote. We were drawn in Group B with Gladstone Road, Cayton and East Ayton B, with the games lasting 7 minutes each. Our squad of players were as follows:-  Stevi, Bella, Beth, Molly, Hannah, Freya, Evie, Connie & Lillie-Mae.

Match One v Gladstone Road
In our first match of the tournament,  we came up against a strong Gladstone Road side(they won their other two matches). We were under pressure for much of the game, however, a combination of good defending, especially by Connie and Molly and two good saves by Beth, we held out for a goalless draw.  Final Score:- St. Martin's 0-0 Gladstone Road

Match Two v East Ayton B - In contrast to our first game, we dominated most of the game, we had several chances to score with Lillie-Mae, Freya and Hannah all going close, but due to good goalkeeping we were unable to score.   Final Score:- St. Martin's 0-0 East Ayton B

Match Three v Cayton - We went into our final group match knowing that a draw would put us into the knockout stage, as we would finish above Cayton on goal difference.  In a keenly contested match, both sides had chances to score, with Hannah twice having shots saved.  Unfortunately, Cayton converted one of their chances to win the game. Final Score:- St. Martin's 0-1 Cayton

We finished third in our group on 2 points, which resulted us going into a mini tournament for the 4 teams who finished third in each group.

Match Four v Hertford Vale Stevi went in goal for this game to give Beth chance to play out for a game. The matches were over 8 minutes, with penalties to decide the winner if a draw at the end of the game. Hertford Vale had some good chances to score but failed to have a shot on target. We had a few chances, the best of which fell to Lillie-Mae who came desperately close to scoring. Her fierce shot beat the goalkeeper, but hit the inside of the post, rolled along the line and back out. The match finished goalless, so we went to a best of three penalty shootout. Beth went in goal for the penalties saving Hertford Vales's first penalty. Hannah stepped up to take our first one confidently firing the ball into the bottom corner. Beth kept out Hertford Vale's second penalty, meaning if we scored our next penalty we'd win. Beth stepped up to fire the ball home and spark jubilant celebrations from our girls. Final Score:- St. Martin's 0-0 Hertford Vale

( St. Martin's win 2-0 on penalties)

Match Five : v Northstead Our final match saw us play Northstead to decide the best third place team. Once again, both sides had chances to win with Hannah going close twice forcing a good save and firing just wide. Northstead did manage to score with one of their chances.

Final Score:- St. Martin's 0-1 Northstead

The girls were a credit to the school playing with great spirit & enthusiasm & enjoyed the experience.

Year 3/4 football match on Tuesday 8th October at Braeburn School

Our year 3/4 boys got chance to play in a friendly tournament involving 12 local schools. The tournament was held at Braeburn School, two leagues of 6 teams each were drawn. We were in a league with Gladstone Road, Newby, Cayton, Barrowcliff and Lindhead. The matches were all played for 6 minutes each.

Our Squad :- Gabriel, Harry K, Luca, Tom, Jonas, Archie, Callum, Sam & Jude

Match one v  Lindhead
We played 9-a-side so everyone played the first game. Tom went in goal, making a couple of good saves. The boys showed their inexperience as this was their first ever match together, resulting on several occasions where the boys got too bunched up together, leaving no-one to pass too. Unfortunately, Lindhead scored the only goal, which Tom couldn't keep out.  Final Score:- St. Martin's 0-1 Lindhead

Match Two v Newby
We showed signs of improvement  with Jonas staying upfront as instructed, resulting in us managing our first shot on target, but their keeper saved it. Our inexperience showed in defence when we left players unmarked through one goal, resulting in Newby scoring twice.     Final Score - St. Martin's 0-2 Newby

Match Three v Cayton
Both sides were evenly matched, it was pleasing to see that some of the coaching given was showing in their play, with our defenders staying back more. Neither side had a clear cut chance with the match ended goalless.                                                                             Final Score - St. Martin's 0-0 Cayton

Match Four v Barrowcliff
In our best match so far, we dominated the first 5 minutes of the game, with Jonas, Gabriel and  Luca all having shots on goal. Archie went closer still, when he turned and shot, only to the ball hit the post and rebound away. Finally, our pressure told and we SCORED OUR FIRST GOAL, good work by Gabriel saw the ball fall to Jonas who calmly slotted the ball home. Unfortunately, Barrowcliff then came back into the game, scoring a brilliant solo goal, with Sam (who took over from Tom in goal) unable to stop the shot from beating him and going in off the inside of the post.     Final Score - St. Martin's 1-1 Barrowcliff

Match Five v Gladstone Road
In our final match, Jude began as sub, for the first time we played a team with only 8 players. Harry went in goal but was unable to stop Gladstone Road take an early lead with a fierce shot. Sam was unlucky when he went on a mazy run beating 3 players only to be denied by a last ditch tackle. Then good interplay between Gabriel and Jonas saw Jonas shoot just wide. Callum and Tom defended well, Jude came on for Archie. Sadly, Gladstone Road added a second goal to run out winners. Final Score - St. Martin's 0-2 Gladstone Road

Finally, a big thank you to Tom's mum for helping transport the team to Braeburn and to Mrs Cliffe for helping manage the boys between games.

Yr. 5/6 Girls Tag Rugby at Scarborough Rugby Club on Thursday 26thhSeptember 2019

Our year 5/6 girls took part in a friendly girl only tag rugby competition up at Scarborough Rugby Club. It was the first time that any of the girls had played tag rugby against other schools and they did St. Martin’s proud, showing lots of enthusiasm, skill, energy, team effort and resilience to play five matches in a row. They also had to put up with several rain showers that blew across the ground, in their first match play against a team with 10 players to our 7, in in the second match play against a team with 9 players to our 7. The results of the games were as follows: -

Match One v Hunmanby A - The girls did their best coming close to scoring on a couple of occasions, however, Hunmanby A ran in 4 tries to win the match,  Final Score :- St Martin's 0-4 Hunmanby A

Match Two v Braeburn - In a match that ebbed and flowed, the girls twice took the lead with tries by Eliza and Molly only to be pegged back by Braeburn. Eliza though sealed the win with two further tries.  Final Score :- St Martin's 4-2 Braeburn

Match Three v Hunmanby B  In a thrilling match that saw our girls take the lead three times through tries from Eliza, Molly and Holly only for Hunmanby to cancel each try out with a try of their own. Megan won the match for us with a last minute try.  Final Score :- St Martin's 4-3 Hunmanby B

Match Four v East Ayton  In another see-saw match, Bella and Eliza twice gave us the lead only for us to again concede equalizing tries. Holly went over for the decisive try before Eliza scored her second try of the match right at the end to secure the win.  Final Score :- St Martin's 4-2 East Ayton

Match Five v Newby  Our final match saw another close fought match with Newby cancelling out a try by Holly to take the lead with two tries of their own. Megan then equalised with a fine try only for Newby to regain the lead. Molly though ensured we drew the match by scoring our third try.
Final Score :- St Martin's 3-3 Newby

Finally, a huge thank you to Megan's mum and Mrs Jennings for helping transport the team to the rugby club.

Year 5/6 football league on Wednesday 25th September at Wheatcroft School

Team :- Robert, Ben, Casey, Joey M., Monty, Luca S., Bertie & Oskar

We today took part in our first super league matches each lasting 15 minutes each.

Match One :- v Wheatcroft
In our first match we played well from the start & after going close twice, Luca opened the scoring for us. Casey & Ben both made vital clearances before Oskar turned sharply to fire us into a two goal lead. Robert had little to do in goal & shortly before the match finished Luca scored again.

Final Score :- St Martin's 3-0 Wheatcroft

Match Two:-  v Overdale
In a hard fought match which could have gone either way, the match was settled by a brilliant  team goal scored by Oskar, after several passes cut the Overdale defence to pieces leaving Oskar with a tap in at the far post. Robert made several outstanding saves.
Final Score :- St Martin's 1-0 Overdale

Match Three :- v Braeburn
In our final match we dominated the game and ran out comprehensive winners. Another great team goal saw Oskar open the scoring, before Luca scored three excellent goals and we came close on several other occasions.
Final Score :- St Martin's 4-0 Braeburn

Finally, a big thank you to Robert's dad for helping move our goals over to Wheatcroft & then back again after the matches.

Summer Smash Cricket at Scarborough Cricket Ground on Wednesday 22nd May 2019

Edward, Sam, Oskar, Thomas, Josh, Eliza, Lillie-Mae, Olivia, Holly and Joshua took part in this event at the Scarborough Cricket Ground on North Marine Road.  They played against local schools.  In our first game we beat Lindhead, we then lost to Cayton and in the final game we beat Sherburn.

The children played really well as a team and were a credit to themselves and St. Martin’s.

Year 3/4 Tennis at Hackness Tennis Club on Thursday 23rd May and Thursday 6th June 2019

Lillie-Mae, Eliza, Oskar, Edward and Holly have represented St. Martin’s at all of the games this season and have not lost one match.  Well done to you all.

They now go through to the North Yorkshire 2019 School Game Finals - at Queen Margaret’s School, Sunday 7th July.

17th June 2019 at St Martin's School

Group 3 Gladstone Road; Northstead; St Martin's; Newby

St Martin's Team :- Ben , Jacob , Jake , Lewis , Max , Harvey, Millie and Mirren

Match v Northstead

In our opening match we played Northstead and after Ben won the toss, we put Northstead into bat. We managed to take 6 Northstead wickets during the 8 overs bowled, including some good catches and run outs. Northstead scored a total of 223/6 (each team starts with 200 runs, & for each wicket you lose 5 runs).  Ben and Jake opened the batting, with Lewis and Jacob going in next. Millie and Mirren were next in and finally Harvey and Max closed our innings. Unfortunately, although we only lost 3 wickets, we fell 4 runs short of Northstead's total, finishing on 219/3.

Match v Gladstone Road

In our final match (Newby were unable to attend), we played a strong Gladstone Road team and after they won the toss, they chose to bowl first. We kept the same batting partners, although we changed the order around with Millie and Mirren opening the batting against some very hostile bowling. We played some good shots, but unfortunately lost 5 wickets as well finishing on 201/5. Gladstone Road were initially pegged back with some good bowling and terrific fielding with Ben and Lewis both taking excellent catches. However, they eventually proved too strong for us, finishing on 222/4.

Overall, the team did us proud as they were put together at the last minute, with no practice and we were the only team to field girls as well as boys. Although we lost both matches, there is an outside chance that we may progress to the Area Finals as some teams have pulled out.

We took our children to the golf club to compete against a number of other schools.  The children did incredibly well and came 2nd place with 695 points, only 3 points behind Lindhead who took 1st place.

Well done to our six children who took part in the first tennis match of the summer.  Unfortunately, not many schools entered but we were able to have a few games with the other school that was there.

Thank you to Oskar’s mum for helping with transport.

Thank you to Mrs Rutt for organising our teams for this year’s Relay Races.  All the children completed the course with the Year 5 boys coming 2nd and the Year 5 girls coming 4th.  The children were supportive of each other, well behaved and a credit to the school.

Year 5/6 Scarborough Primary Schools Swimming Gala on Thursday 4th April 2019

Year 6 - Jacob, Franki, Oliver, Elliott, Mirren, Darcy, Ruby and Naomi

Year 5 – Luka, Ben, Aidan, Josh, Soraya, Freya, Abana and Molly

Mrs Logue and Mrs Stephenson took 16 of our children to represent St. Martin’s in the Scarborough Primary School Swimming Gala at the Everyone Active Swimming Pool.

The children competed against 16 local primary schools.  Each race was a distance of 25 m in either individual front crawl, breast stroke, backstroke, butterfly and also medley and freestyle relay races.

Unfortunately, the Year 6 freestyle relay points were not added to the final scores as time ran out for the competition.

The children all swan incredibly well securing 7th place in the competition and were a credit to St. Martin’s School.  Many thanks to the parents for helping to bring the children back to school.
