St Martin’s School is committed to ensuring the welfare and safety of all children in school. All North Yorkshire schools, including St Martin’s School, follow the North Yorkshire Safeguarding Children Board procedures. The school will, in most circumstances, endeavour to discuss all concerns with parents about their children. However, there may be exceptional circumstances when the school will discuss concerns with Social Care and/or the Police without parental knowledge (in accordance with Child Protection procedures).
We will ensure parents are aware of the fact that referrals about suspected abuse or neglect may be made and the role of the School in this.
The school will, of course, always aim to maintain a positive relationship with all parents. The school’s child protection policy is available on request. There is a Governor responsible for Child Protection. We fully support the NYCC Equality Policy:
North Yorkshire County Council’s Equality Policy Statement:
“we oppose all forms of unlawful or unfair discrimination, whether because of race, colour, ethnic or national origin, sex or gender reassignment, marital status, family status, sexuality, religion or beliefs, disability, age or any other condition or requirement which places a person at a disadvantage and cannot be justified”.
Mrs Claire Barber is the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
Mrs Karen Plumpton and Mrs Helen Newton are Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead

Our staff are trained as Stonewall School Champions. This means we are committed to celebrating different families and tackling racist, homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying. This is crucial to making all children feel welcome, and enabling them to learn to accept others for who they are.
