Welcome to

St. Martin's Early Years Unit!

A huge hello from Mrs Smith and Miss Moss!

Keep up to date with your child's class teacher by using your child's Class Dojo account.

Phonics and Reading

In the Early Years Unit we are currently in the processor choosing a new phonics scheme. We are working closely with the English Hub.

We are currently using Letters and Sounds.

The books we are using are fully decodable for early readers.

Phonics is fun and we love to learn!

Reading is very important to us and we read at every opportunity.

Children take part in daily phonics sessions and regular guided reading sessions as well as one to one reading sessions.

These sessions are tracked closely and we use the keep up approach, implementing a number of strategies in order for children to achieve the best outcomes possible.

We aim for all children to adore reading and read for enjoyment and with purpose too.

This year we are taking part in an exciting maths project with the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Maths.

We use lots of visual representations of numbers and encourage children to develop a deeper level of understanding.

We take part in daily planned number sessions and look for opportunities to extend our knowledge during play and exploration too.

Spring One Planning

Please take a look at the Long Term Plan Spring One.

This term we are focussing on our environments, learning more about seasonal changes

and we are also exploring keeping healthy.

In phonics the children begin their phase 3 focus and are developing fluency skills.

We link our writing skills to our phonics knowledge too.

In maths we continue to focus on our mastery approach building a deep knowledge of numbers to 10 and extend further.
