Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation...

Dear parents,

St. Martin’s School is supporting the above charity by acting as a collection point for unwanted printer cartridges and mobile phones. Here are some facts to keep in mind:

Mobile Phones

• Corrosion of mobile phones and their batteries can occur if buried in landfill sites allowing toxic chemicals to leach into the soil.

• Used mobile phones can be refurbished for use in developing countries with poor landline infrastructures.

• Every year millions of people change their mobile phones, yet very few will be recycled.

• There are many unused mobile phones in homes and workplaces throughout Britain.

• Phones that are unsuitable for recycling are disposed of safely, without harm to theenvironment.

Cartridges

• 30 million printer cartridges are disposed of each year and only 5% are recycled.

• These dumped cartridges contribute over 300,000 tonnes of largely non biodegradable solid waste in landfill sites.

• This buried waste is worth approximately £57 million.

• In the last decade it is estimated that printer cartridges worth around £500,000,000 were dumped in landfill sites. They could have been used to provide much-needed cash to worthwhile charities.

• It takes approximately 1.5 pints of crude oil to manufacture a new toner cartridge.

How can you help?

Simply send into school any types of printer cartridges that you do not already recycle back to the manufacturers. Also if you have any old mobile phones no
longer wanted the please also send those in to school. We’ll do the rest. If you want to know more then check out this website:

Yours sincerely,
