Ninth station: Jesus Falls For The Third Time by Chloe and Jenny

How we drew the picture:

Firstly we practiced drawing some of our ideas for the ninth station on an A3 piece of paper. Then when we were happy we put our ideas together and then started drawing our station. To start of with, Chloe faintly drew Jesus whilst Jenny worked on the woman in the picture, whom we based on a pre-Raphaelite painting which is pictured below. the painting is called Prosperpine and the model is Jane Morris – a beautiful woman.

Jane Morris in Prosperpine

(Persephone in Greek, Proserpine in Latin. She was a daughter of Demeter. Hades fell in love with his niece and abducted her when she was playing on a meadow with  her nymphs. Hades made her his wife, the Queen of the Underworld. Demetra was in grief, and the earth froze. Zeus ordered Hades to return the daughter to her mother. But this was no longer possible, as Persephone unintentionally ate a seed of pomegranate, which was enough to tie her to the Underworld. Since then she spends half a year with her mother, and the earth blossoms, and half a year with her husband, and the earth becomes barren.)

After a while we moved around and worked on different areas of the painting. We finished all of the detail - time to start on the painting!

How we painted the painting:

Firstly we painted the sky. We poured some white, crimson and red into a pallet. We mixed a bit of red paint into the white, and painted the first line of sky. We carried on adding more red and then did some more strokes, until we started to add crimson for a darker effect, the overall effect was to produce a sky getting darker and darker down the page, this represented the blood of Christ.

Next we painted the cross, we decided on burnt sienna – a nice brown. This was easy; we painted the whole cross one way and added a darker brown for a wood effect.

Painting the people was not so easy, we had to paint in great detail and concentrate really hard. We started with the woman. Firstly we filled in the dress with a purple colour that we’d mixed. Until quickly moving on to the face and hair, we made a brown colour for the hair and, obviously a skin colour for the face. Jesus was easier; we had already got the hang of it so we were just able to mix some colours and paint. Once we had added the detail we were very impressed.

A few finishing touches were added (like the grass and the dove) and we were finished – Yippee!
