On Wednesday 11th February Year 6 pupils of St Martin’s School, Scarborough had a Passover meal to represent the suffering of the Israelites in captivity by the Egyptians. I went to experience this feast of the Passover. Father Tony was there to celebrate this special occasion.

The feast of the Passover contains a leg of lamb, bitter herbs, horseradish, Haggadah, charoset, salt water, matzos, roasted egg and green herbs (lettuce).

Then Father Tony gave a blessing and He dipped the parsley into the salt water and told us do the same it tasted ok! When we dip the parsley into the salt water it reminds us of the tears of the Israelites in slavery by the Egyptians. Then Father Tony took the matzah (pitta bread) and broke it. This reminds us of the unleavened bread that the Israelites ate before they fled Egypt to go to the Promised Land. After that we all had to lift our cups to a toast and then we drank some of the grape juice. There were four toasts altogether the other three came later.

Then there were a couple of readings from the Year 6 pupils and then we came to the horseradish. Father Tony took a piece of lettuce and dipped it into the horseradish. Then we did the same. It was quite hot at first but once I’d tried it again it started to put a nice taste in my mouth. Then we made a sandwich and we were supposed to give it to a best friend or boyfriend or girlfriend. But I couldn’t because I didn’t know anybody there so I just ate it myself. A few minutes later we drunk the second and after a reading the third toast.

Then we came to the main meal. We had as much lamb as we wanted as well as the charoset, horseradish, egg, lettuce and parsley. After we had finished our meal we drank the fourth and last toast and then we lifted our cup and shouted NEXT YEAR IN JERUSALEM!

Well I enjoyed it!
