The Story of The First Christmas using Illustrations from the Artists of the Middle Ages

Year 6 undertake two major painting projects, one during the autumn term and one during the spring term.

The autumn term project is to complete a series of 16 large paintings for display in St. Martin's Church.

The designs are direct copies of Illustrations from the Middle Ages. These are  projected on OHP's and draw by the children.

The children work in groups of two to paint the illustrations using bright colours. They experience choosing and mixing colours, and developing a strategy to complete the painting, starting with the largest areas down to the finest detail.

This experience in collaborating to produce paintings on a large scale is good  preparation for the second project next term. This is to design and produce their own Stations of the Cross in a Pre-Raphaelite style for display in the churches at Easter. In preparation for this the children visit St. Saviours Church to study the Stations of the Cross permanently on display there, and St. Martin's Church to study Pre-Raphaelite art.
