Lucy Willshaw: Class 3, Y3 & Y4

All the way through school, I wanted to be a teacher, either chemistry or physics, depending on which subject was more in favour at the time. However, by the time I left Durham University with a BSc Honours (2:1) in Geology, I had gone off the idea. (I think the prospect of spending another 40 years in education was a bit off putting!) After university I spent 2 years working in a Christian holiday and conference centre in the Yorkshire Dales.

It was here, while working alongside residential school visits, that I realised that with my varied interests and skills, primary teaching would be a rewarding career choice. I worked for my PGCE under the guidance of Nottingham University, though I spent the majority of the year working and learning within Pickering Junior School.

After successfully completing my first year of teaching at Amotherby Primary School near Malton, I moved to St. Martin’s in September 2000. I now teach Class 4 (Years 3 and 4) and co-ordinate music and geography throughout the school, as well as running the choir (with the help of Mrs. Helen Hartley) and 3 different ability recorder groups. I also co-run the Latin Club with Mr. Mike Bortoft.

In the spare time that I do have out of school, I like to walk, read and act with my local theatre group. I was brought up in South Lincolnshire, and find it hard to believe that I’ve spent the last 6 years living and working in the places I spent many a happy family holiday. As I do not live in Scarborough, I still get excited about seeing the sea every day, too!
